On the latest episode of Sit Down With Saints, we caught up with former Saint and current Saints Women’s Head Coach Matty Smith.
Matty is a Saints academy product who made his debut for the side in 2006, picking up heritage number 1155, when we took on the Huddersfield Giants away from home in a close 18-16 win. Matty started that game on the bench but came onto the field on 53 minutes making his full first-team debut. Matty went on to make five appearances in 2006, scoring one try against Harlequins in his final appearance of the season.
Stuart Pyke took Matty through his career from that point and spoke of all the ups and downs through his career, from joining Salford, then moving on to the Wigan Warriors, and coming back to the club, then his experiences after his playing career.
We also spoke about that infamous 2016 Good Friday derby moment.
With our academy & first team both coming away victorious in our Thursday doubleheader, go behind the scenes of the games, showing you all the unseen angles of some amazing tries, and the team song for the first team with a youngster whose stock has only been rising in recent weeks taking the lead for the first time.
We also take the time to show you all the highlights from the Women’s first-team game against London in the Challenge Cup, and all the post-match reaction from Matty’s first win as head coach.
Coming back to Matty, we spoke about his time with the girls so far and how it’s been for him coming back into the fold, taking his first go at coaching in a prominent position as the head coach of the women’s team. He is also doing work with the SCDF as part of his role back at saints.
