Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll reviewed St.Helens’ 48-10 away loss to Leigh Leopards. The result confirmed that the Saints will, for the first time since 1962, not feature in the play-offs.
O’Carroll praised St. Helens’ effort and togetherness despite the defeat to Leigh. The Saints were again without an unprecedented number of senior players, with up to 17 not available for selection due to injury or suspension.
Several young players were asked to play extended minutes, and O’Carroll was proud of their efforts. The interim boss believes the experience will benefit them, despite the difficult circumstances.
He also highlighted the commitment of senior men such as David Klemmer, Jacob Host, Shane Wright and Joe Shorrocks, all of whom continued to put their hands up despite the physical demands of recent weeks, and throughout this injury ravaged season, for their work and commitment to their teammates.
O’Carroll admitted that missing out on the play-offs does not sit well with him, having been part of the team that brought the Club’s long-standing run to an end. Despite the disappointment, O’Carroll believes positive foundations have been built and that the Club is well placed to respond. He also feels Kevin Walters’ arrival provides an opportunity to accelerate that progress ahead of 2027.
