Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll spoke to the press following St.Helens 18-32 defeat at home to Hull FC.
O’Carroll admitted St.Helens were well below the standards expected in their disappointing home defeat to Hull FC, acknowledging that too many mistakes and a lack of composure ultimately proved costly.
He believed the side repeatedly put itself under unnecessary pressure through errors and penalties, and said the team failed to carry out the simplified approach they had worked on. As the match wore on, those issues became more pronounced, allowing Hull to build momentum and take control.
O’Carroll praised the efforts of our young players, recognising the difficult circumstances they continue to face with so many experienced teammates unavailable through injury. He stressed that the youngsters were gaining valuable experience and should not shoulder the blame. The interim Saints boss did acknowledge that some senior players should expect more of themselves after the defeat.
Whilst the pressure continues to build ramp up for the aim of a top-six finish, O’Carroll insisted all at the Saints would fight for it. He told the players after the match that everyone must remain fully committed over the final weeks of the season, adding that any hint from anyone of giving up would not be accepted.
