The Story
As we continue to celebrate the Club approaching 150th Birthday in November 2023, we have gone back in time to acknowledge bygone days, before Saints had ever worn the famous ‘Red Vee’.
Inspired by a trading card from the early Knowsley Road era in the early 1890’s, which was part of the Baines Trading Card collection – which itself dates back to the time of the Club’s founding in 1873.
The trading cards were collected by children and hugely popular in the fledgling days of the Club.
The colour pallete has been inspired by this trading card crest which also features on the lower left hem of the shirt.
The kit bends together a celebration of History, Club and Town into one.
The ‘Play Up St.Helens’ Crest taken from a Baines Trading card of the era of the Club’s founding in 1873.
Signature of the Club’s Founder Douglas Herman, taken from a census return in the early 20th Century.
The Kit
The shirt has a very traditional look with Brown and Sky hoops, cleverly alternated to create a front of shirt vee, coupled with a traditional White collar with Button fastening.
The left chest proudly carries an adapted version of the St.Helens Town Crest, used in the 1960s and 70s, on an enlarged white background with the Club initials ‘STH R.F.C.’ adorned underneath.
The shirt will be the first time in 27 years, since the 1996 season, that the St Helens playing shirt has featured the Town crest in a match.
The kit will be worn at both the Magic Weekend 2023, and will also be worn in our Heritage Celebration Fixture, in Round 25 Betfred Super League vs Leigh Leopards at Totally Wicked Stadium, Friday 8 September 2023.
The shirt has been produced in partnership with our Official partners, O’Neills.
Our principal front of shirt partner is again Home Bargains.
Our other kit partners are – Totally Wicked, Kinaxia Logistics, A Star Recruitment, St.Helens College, Boardrm and Node4 as well as Biffa and ELCONS feature on the shorts.
The kit will be complimented by white shorts with a Brown/Sky side panel and Brown/Sky hooped socks, of which very limited quantities are available.
The replica shirt is made from modern Koolite fabric as per all recent replica kits giving a lightweight and easily cared for garment.
Please note: For performance reasons the players will wear a very similar shirt but with a modern collar-less neck on their shirts.
