In the latest edition of Sit Down With Saints, we welcomed club CEO Mike Rush to the studio to talk all things Saints, not only on the pitch, but also the day-to-day operations at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
Mike has been at the club in some capacity for nearly 24 years now, and in his position as CEO for just over a decade, overseeing the development of the team and the rugby performance department in what has been the most consistently successful period in the club’s history.
We also took a look at our recent 150-year celebration dinner, and how our Academy and Scholars are taking to being back in training.
Stuart Pyke, the host of Sit Down With Saints, took Mike back to the recent COVID issues across sports and how we as a club have been dealing with that.
He went into the details of how the business’s conference and events arm has helped bring in revenue, and how that goes a long way to helping, but it comes with its own set of issues and challenges along the way.
As with any sports team, the on-the-pitch performance is the main focus of the club, and Mike detailed how that is no different for us here, and, while last year we lost out in two semi-finals, we had on average between 50-60% of our salary cap on the field, but with 80% on the field, statistically, we win. So, the focus has to be on us keeping our players on the field, under whatever guise that comes in.
Mike also went into detail about why the number 3 shirt is still vacant, and why finding a worthy recipient is proving to be difficult in the current climate.
