St.Helens Women’s Head Coach Matty Smith looks ahead to the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Semi-Final against York Valkyrie.
The Saints are just eighty minutes away from a return to Wembley for a second year straight in our bid to continue making history and to fight for a fourth straight Challenge Cup trophy win. The Red V retained the Cup last year after besting York in the Semi-Final 17-16 thanks to a Faye Gaskin last minute drop goal, before beating Leeds 8-22 at the national stadium in a seismic moment for the Women’s game.
Smith talks to Saints TV about preparing to face the Valkyrie and how the meetings between Saints and York are big games but that his team are ready and want these big occasions. The boss also reflects on our narrow defeat to York in Round 1 of the league campaign stating lessons have been learned after a poor opening half against the current WSL Champions.
In an update regarding his team too, Smith talks about the competition in the squad with young players pushing for places, and Emily Rudge could be back for selection too.
To close, Smith called upon the Saints supporters to get to Doncaster and support the girls as we bid to reach another final.
