St.Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens gave his honest assessment of his side’s 6-8 defeat at home to Castleford Tigers.
For the second round running, the Red V were just edged out by two points but it was an overall bitterly disappointing night for the Saints in their first home match at the Totally Wicked Stadium for five weeks.
Wellens was not making excuses, whilst St.Helens are missing a number of front-line forwards, he believed the team he named should have been able to get the result on the night and were not a team that he usually sees being comfortable with being in a tight contest. Furthermore, he was disheartened that the prep work of his Assistant Coach Laurent Frayssinous was not executed.
On a night where there were two debuts for Jake Burns and Jonny Vaughan, Wellens was gutted that the team could not mark their special nights with a victory.
Reflecting also on the supporters’ reaction at the full time hooter, the Saints boss sternly declared he hopes anyone wearing a St.Helens shirt on the field should feel stung by it.
