Head Coach Paul Wellens speaks to the press following his side’s very disappointing defeat to Leigh Leopards in Round 19 of Betfred Super League 2024.
St.Helens were well beaten on the road by the Leopards, 46-4 and were never in control of the fixture. Wellens highlighted that his team’s efforts to work hard was there, shown by sprinting to scramble back, but Saints should have been working harder, earlier, and we ended up having to ask too much of ourselves far too often.
The Saints made unwanted history with the loss, suffering five losses in a row in Super League for the first time, and Wellens speaks about his desire and desperation to win all games, especially now given our recent form. Whilst our team are doing it tough on the injury front and going through a very challenging period, the Saints boss knows having been through similar periods as a player that the way to get through it is by sticking together.
Whilst it was a poor night, the efforts of our youngsters such as Harry Robertson, Noah Stephens, and Jonny Vaughan were credited by the St.Helens boss as they continue their development.
In an update on his squad following the match, Wellens revealed that Jack Welsby suffered a hamstring injury in the second minute of the match which will likely keep him out for a number of weeks. Furthermore, Moses Mbye, Mark Percival and George Delaney all powered through the game as best they could and have been contending injuries of their own, he reveals the latest on those men too.
