St.Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens gives his verdict on his side’s 20-0 defeat to Wigan Warriors at Magic WKND 2024.
Wellens knew his team would be challenged, given the high number of unavailable players through injury and suspensions, with players also playing out of their normal positions. However, the Saints boss was disappointed that his troops did not take the opportunities when they eventually came, whilst the Warriors took theirs early in the game.
There was plenty of effort in the team, especially given the wider context of the available players, but some in-game details where the team needed to be smarter left Wellens frustrated.
Speaking about his team selection, Wellens opens up on his thought process which led him to choosing the lineup he did, including naming Matty Lees as his captain for the fixture – insisting he truly deserved it.
In a squad update, the Saints Head Coach revealed that Curtis Sironen came off early in the match due to a calf issue which will need further assessment. When asked about any bodies coming back for next week’s match against Hull KR, Wellens stated Jonny Lomax would be back from suspension and that Sione Mata’utia may return from a neck injury.
