Head Coach Paul Wellens gives his verdict on his side’s victory over Huddersfield Giants in Round 24 of Betfred Super League.
It was a much-needed win for the Saints as the top six race continues to heat up, and it came against a side who were smarting from a heavy defeat on the road last week and were looking to respond at home.
Wellens knows that there was a number of areas that his team can improve upon, but he was pleased with the effort and resilience of the Saints. In an open and honest assessment, as he always is following fixtures, the Red V boss believed there was a re-connection to the team’s identity, to be in tight games and go on to win them.
Full of praise for some of his senior men, Wellens credited the effort of Morgan Knowles who demonstrated how valuable he is to St.Helens, evidenced by his last ditch efforts to stop the Giants’ first score despite it being a lost cause. Moses Mbye in the halves showed his seniority with strong kicking, and Wellens explains why he chose to play Mbye over youngster George Whitby.
