St.Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens speaks to the press following his side’s 23-22 Eliminator Play-Off loss away at Warrington Wolves which ended Saints’ 2024 season.
After what was possibly one of the best and most dramatic matches of the 2024 Betfred Super League season, it was Wellens’ men who were left hurting after narrowly missing out on progressing to the Semi-Finals.
Not mincing his words, Paul called it “soul destroying” as the Red V fell to such a narrow defeat, but he was also keen to impress to the media that he was proud of his players for their efforts in a match of rugby league that was played how he believes it should be played.
Assessing where the game may have been lost for his team, he believes errors from the Saints cost dearly, and that we were contributors in giving the host team a couple of tries, and better field position for the crucial drop goal.
Reflecting on the season as a whole, the Saints boss admitted it has been a challenging year, both personally and collectively – insisting that he himself and we as a team will be better for it.
The match result meant it would be the final one played by Tommy Makinson, Lewis Dodd and Sione Mata’utia for St.Helens. Wellens shared his thanks to those men and encouraged the team to be together to celebrate those players’ contributions to some special moments achieved by our Club.
