Head Coach Matty Smith alongside retiring St.Helens Women star players Faye Gaskin and Tara Jones gave their reaction to the heartbreaking loss in the 2024 Women’s Super League Grand Final.
The Saints fell short of a historic treble of trophies for the 2024 season, losing out 8-18 to the reigning champions York Valkyrie in front of a record crowd for the Women’s Super League Grand Final.
Smith credited York for their performance but stated how his side made too many errors for finals rugby league.
As previously confirmed, Faye Gaskin played her final match in the Red V strip and not admitted she is not a person who gets too emotional. Confirming she was comfortable with the decision to call time on her playing days, she is excited for what post-rugby life looks like, even if she’s to discover what it may all fully consist of yet.
As for Tara, our Women’s Heritage Number #1, the hooker confirmed that the Grand Final was also her final match for St.Helens too. Tara is about to become a full time match official with the Rugby Football League, continuing to be a trail-blazer for the women’s game.
Smith credited his team for their remarkable efforts all season long, for winning two trophies and almost making it three. He also paid tribute to two superstars of the women’s game in Gaskin and Jones, thanking them for their efforts for our club.
