St.Helens Assistant Coach Lee Briers spoke to the press ahead of this Friday night’s match in France against Toulouse Olympique.
The Saints have been hit hard by injuries, including Curtis Sironen and Nene Macdonald, both now out for around six weeks, with Macdonald undergoing surgery. Briers was quick to pivot the discussion from this being a challenge we are facing with a number of players unavailable to one about the opportunity it has created for younger players. 13 of our 21-man squad are products of the Saints Academy. He believes it reflects the strength of the Club’s pathway, with several youngsters possibly stepping up and representing the First Team.
Toulouse are expected to provide a tough test, having been competitive in their early matches so far this season, and having had a week off with no Challenge Cup action. However, the Saints head into the game confident, with recent travel to Perpignan helping expectations for the journey ahead.
By virtue of travelling on Thursday, the team will spend some extended time together on the trip, which Briers feels is valuable for building connections and maintaining a positive environment.
Injury setbacks remain a challenge, with several players sidelined, but Briers is encouraged by how the group continues to adapt. He believes the team’s system and style of play are beginning to take shape under Head Coach Paul Rowley, with players buying into the approach and delivering gritty performances.
