Paul Rowley spoke to the press following the Saints’ 18-12 victory over Wakefield Trinity in Round 9 of the Betfred Super League.
Rowley admitted it was far from a comfortable evening watching it up in the stands, despite the positive result. The Saints controlled much of the first half and built a 16-point lead. However, Rowley felt there was still room for improvement even during that period, with his side not quite hitting top gear.
Wakefield, as expected, responded strongly after the break, turning the contest into a far more physical and demanding battle as they dominated large spells of the second half.
Rowley pointed to defence as the foundation of the win, highlighting that limiting Wakefield to just 12 points ultimately proved decisive. He stressed that attacking fluency is often a by-product of defensive effort, with territory and possession earned through hard work rather than creativity alone.
There were positives across the side, including the return of Jonny Lomax, who came through a tough reintroduction after injury and added composure. Jake Davies also continued to impress grabbing his third try in three weeks.
