Head Coach Paul Rowley gave his reaction to the press following St.Helens’ 40-16 victory over York Knights.
Rowley was broadly pleased with his side’s performance, but acknowledged some elements that left him wanting more. A strong start, which saw Saints race into a 16-point lead, but he felt the overall scoreline did not fully reflect the contest, with York being highly competitive.
Giving credit to York’s resilience and willingness to compete, the Saints boss felt his side could have controlled more of the game by sticking to what got our early tries in the game. Key moments included a 40/20 kick from Tristan Sailor, which he described as a significant and timely contribution rather than a decisive turning point.
Speaking positively about the returns of Jack Welsby and Nene Macdonald from long-term injuries, Rowley stated the plan was to manage their minutes for their reintroductions, with game time essential to their comebacks and if they were to feature in next week’s Challenge Cup Semi-Final.
