Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll speaks to the press ahead of Saturday’s match away at Wakefield Trinity.
The Saints coach expects a tough challenge against the West Yorkshire side, and insists his side remain determined to fight until the end of the season.
O’Carroll has been impressed by Wakefield’s progress since their return to Super League and believes they are capable of becoming regular contenders near the top of the competition. He praised their recruitment and coaching, while highlighting their strong record since Saints defeated them earlier this season.
Despite the noise surrounding Saints’ play-off hopes, O’Carroll believes there is plenty for his players to fight for in the final five games. He expects the squad to embrace the challenge at a difficult venue.
The return of Deon Cross and Nene Macdonald provides a boost. O’Carroll was particularly pleased with Macdonald’s progress after a difficult season due to injury, and he talks about the advantages of having more senior players back in training.
Sadly, O’Carroll confirmed that St.Helens will be without George Whitby after he suffered an ACL injury which has ended his season. It’s heartbreaking news for the young half after he just made his return from an injury on his other knee. O’Carroll praised George, insisting he is one of the most diligent young players he has ever met, and believes in him to come back stronger.
