St.Helens Head Coach Paul Rowley speaks to Saints TV ahead of his side taking on fierce rivals Wigan Warriors in the Semi-Finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup on Saturday afternoon.
While the scale of the game is obvious, Rowley is keen for his side to stay level-headed in the early part of the week before ramping things up closer to kick-off. With a place at Wembley at stake, the Saints boss knows emotions will naturally rise, but the focus is on being ready to perform when it matters.
The Good Friday meeting between the two sides was a thriller which the Red V triumphed in, but Rowley is not buying into any talk of Wigan looking for revenge. Instead, he sees this as a fresh derby contest, with the outcome likely to come down to who does the basics as best they can, for longer than their opposition.
Taking place at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington, it is set to be an electric atmosphere, with Saints closing in on selling out our allocation of tickets. Following his first Good Friday Derby experience, Rowley is anticipating another intense occasion, with supporters playing a big role in driving the game.
The Challenge Cup is a major motivation for the Head Coach. Rowley spoke about the competition’s importance, particularly for players who grow up dreaming of playing at Wembley, and believes that sense of occasion is still very much alive.
