Paul Rowley on courageous win over Catalans

Sat 18 Jul

Saints Head Coach Paul Rowley gave his review to the press following his side’s 34-18 win against Catalans Dragons at the BrewDog Stadium.

Rowley praised the courage and character of his side after they bounced back from last week’s disappointment, with a tight turnaround. He highlighted the contribution of both the Club’s young talent and senior players, saying the youngsters showed tremendous bravery and our experienced members of the team stepped up to guide and protect them.

Attitude and effort were the qualities that were the biggest difference from the previous week’s performance according to the Head Coach. He believed his side approached the game with the right mentality from the outset and produced a determined display that earned the backing of our crowd.

There was particular praise for several of the Club’s homegrown young players, especially after a dream Super League debut for Jack Campbell, whose two tries were matched by an outstanding defensive display on the wing.

Rowley revealed Campbell was only informed he would be playing on Friday morning following Nene Macdonald’s late withdrawal due to an ongoing knee problem, making his performance even more remarkable.

Despite being short of forwards, Rowley was delighted with the platform created by his pack, praising the efforts of Daniel Suluka-Fifita as our only recognised senior prop, as well as the whole forward pack on the night.

While Rowley stressed the victory was only worth two competition points, he admitted it felt like much more because of what it meant for the Club’s younger players. He also thanked the St.Helens faithful for getting behind the team to create a memorable occasion for several players making the first steps of their Super League careers.

Whilst he was pleased with the response, Rowley insisted the focus remains on taking each week as it comes.
