St.Helens’ #1 Jack Welsby speaks to Saints TV ahead of our away match against Wigan Warriors on Friday night.
The full-back says that the squad are looking forward to The Derby after last week’s morale-boosting win over Catalans Dragons, as the team looks to build on that performance.
Welsby admitted the team are eager to put things right after recent defeats, and he believes the Saints learned valuable lessons from the Magic Weekend meeting three weeks ago.
A proud Saints Academy product, Jack praised our youth pathway after several young players impressed against Catalans, such as Jack Campbell and Tom Humphreys. With the squad bolstered by our youngsters, Welsby acknowledged his desire to hold more of a leadership role, and that last week’s victory meant more to him because of that. His passionate celebration against Catalans came from the emotion of the occasion and reflected the belief shared within the dressing room.
Looking ahead to Friday’s Derby Day, Welsby expects another physical battle but hopes the focus remains firmly on the rugby, with less stop-starts and decisions needing to be made. He called on the Saints supporters to get behind the team once again, believing their backing will be especially important for the younger players as they experience one of the biggest atmospheres of the season.
