Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll spoke to the press following St.Helens’ 38-16 loss to Wigan Warriors in Round 20 of the Betfred Super League 2026.
Reflecting on the performance, O’Carroll said he was proud of the effort shown by his depleted Saints side despite the defeat away to an in-form Wigan outfit. He felt the commitment displayed throughout the contest provided plenty of positives and was encouraged by a performance that the team can build on heading into the final seven games of the season.
O’Carroll also spoke about the whirlwind few days leading up to the derby following the departure of Head Coach Paul Rowley, which resulted in him taking interim charge. He explained that one of his main priorities was to inject energy into the squad ahead of the fixture and praised the players for fully embracing the challenge and responding with a committed performance.
While pleased with the character his players showed under difficult circumstances, he stressed that those levels must now become the standard. He believes Saints need to produce the same levels of performance every week if they are to finish the campaign strongly and make it into the Super League playoffs.
The Interim Head Coach also confirmed three further injury setbacks, with Jed Cartwright (Quad), Matty Evans (Concussion) and George Delaney (Shoulder) all forced from the field during the game, adding to the club’s lengthy injury list.
Despite the growing injury concerns, O’Carroll remained optimistic, believing the display at Wigan demonstrated the spirit within the squad and provided a solid platform to build on in the closing stages of the season.
