Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll praised St.Helens’ bravery and belief after the Club produced a stunning 16-46 away win over Wakefield Trinity.
O’Carroll was delighted to see the work put in by the players and staff over recent weeks translate onto the field, particularly after Saints fell 10-0 behind. He felt the team showed a high level of resilience to stay in the contest, respond to pressure and ultimately earn the reward for their efforts late in the game.
The Saints were forced to make several positional changes throughout the match, but O’Carroll was impressed by the players’ adaptability. Tristan Sailor moved to full-back, Jake Davies returned to centre, and Jack Welsby was used on the edge, with the coaching staff pleased by the threat Saints created.
He also singled out the contribution of the Red V’s younger players, with Matty Evans and Billy Keeley stepping up. O’Carroll admitted there had been some concern about exposing the youngsters too much, but praised their quality, composure and attitude.
While the result provides a significant boost, O’Carroll stressed that Saints must remain focused with four games still to play. He believes the difficult period the Club has experienced can ultimately prove valuable, with the squad learning from the challenges and building stronger habits for the future.
O’Carroll also provided an update on Lewis Murphy, who left the field with a lower-limb issue, but does not believe the injury is serious.
