Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll spoke to the press following his side’s 36-12 victory over Castleford Tigers, a game which saw St.Helens finish with just 10 men on the field.
The Saints’ coach praised the character and attitude of his team after being reduced to 12 men for all of the second half, and then further players sat down in the latter stages of the second.
Our Red V led comfortably at half-time by 30 points before Jackson Hastings was sent off shortly before the break. O’Carroll admitted he had not yet seen the incident properly, but was pleased with how calmly the players responded, focusing on what they needed to do next rather than dwelling on the decision.
Eamon revealed that he and his staff kept their instructions simple and asked the players to stick to their roles, and he felt the adversity gave the team an opportunity to show the togetherness that had been a focus throughout the week.
He was also pleased with the developing combinations between Jack Welsby, Tristan Sailor and Harry Robertson. O’Carroll believes Welsby’s role on the edge is allowing him to remain heavily involved in attack and defence, while Robertson is growing in confidence. Tom Humphreys was also praised for his defensive work and growing influence after scoring his first senior try.
Attention now turns to Friday’s fixture, as The Final Charge continues to heat up.
