Interim Head Coach Eamon O’Carroll speaks to the press ahead of St.Helens’ Round 26 away clash against Leigh Leopards.
O’Carroll admits the Saints face a major challenge at The Progress With Unity Stadium, but insists his injury-hit squad must embrace the opportunity rather than feel sorry for themselves.
Saints will be without up to 17 experienced First Team players, but O’Carroll believes the situation is familiar after a season of significant injury disruption. He has challenged the senior players available to step up, while allowing younger members of the squad to make their mark.
Leigh provide a tough test, with O’Carroll praising their physicality, skill and recent consistency. Despite Saints potentially being regarded as underdogs, he remains confident they have enough quality to compete if everyone performs their role and, above all, competes with the right attitude.
The game comes after Mark Percival announced his retirement at the end of the season, with O’Carroll paying tribute to his character and outstanding contribution to the Club. Jack Welsby will also make his 200th career appearance, while academy prospect Oscar Knox is set to make his First Team debut, giving Saints further motivation to perform with freedom, toughness and pride in their play-off push.
