St.Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens reviews his side’s 4-18 loss to Wigan Warriors in Round 25.
The Red V started the match in fantastic fashion in the opening quarter, and whilst Wellens praised his team’s effort, he was left frustrated with a lack of game smarts in certain moments that swung the momentum. He went onto to say that he believed his squad were delivering 90% on what they as a team have discussed in the week, but the final 10% is hurting their efforts in matches.
Highlighting an example of what he means by his comment, it was penalties that piggybacked the visitors to get their opening try of the night.
Our lineup saw Jack Welsby named at loose forward, not a position unfamiliar to him, but the St.Helens boss knew that it would raise eyebrows. Explaining his decision, Wellens had the feeling in his gut it was the right call to put a dangerous player in an important position, and it was proved with his brilliant involvement in the setup for our sole try on the night.
Discussing further where his Saints were costing themselves, he wants better from his team rather than making fundamental errors, like knocking the ball on when in a good ball position.
