St.Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens speaks to the press following our Round 26 loss to Leigh Leopards.
On where he believed the game was won by the hosts, Wellens talked about the speed of the defence, and the ruck being too quick by Leigh which gave them the edge to go on and get the victory with our players needing to do too much work. Whilst crediting his men for getting themselves back in the contest after going 12-0 down to make it 12-10, he stated that the team need to handle situations better particularly after Leigh managed to get a score back to turn the tide back in their favour.
The result confirmed that St.Helens will finish fifth in the table, and that next week’s match against Castleford will be our final home match of the campaign. Wellens would not be drawn on how he will shape up his team for the game against the Tigers, but he made certain that whatever seventeen he selects, they will be playing to win.
Alex Walmsley unfortunately failed a Head Injury Assessment, and whilst it did effect the game plan, Wellens knows that in the Play-Offs there will be times where our team will have to deal with adversity such as that, and they will need to handle it better than they did against Leigh. That is one point on a checklist of areas that Wellens wants his Saints to work hard on as we move forward into the closing stages of the season.
