Ahead of our first competitive game of the 2026 season, in the Betfred Challenge Cup away at Workington, we caught up with Matt Whitley fresh off breaking his nose in Matty Lees’ Testimonial.
Matt said that his nose was actually a case of friendly fire, hitting it off the back of George Delaney’s head, but that he is getting on okay, and the doctors have sorted him out. So, he will be ready to go on Friday night.
With all the new ideas brought in by Paul Rowley and the new players, it’s been a good pre-season, and he’s looking forward to the campaign ahead.
On the new players, Matt admitted that he is relishing the competition in the pack this season, as it will do the team a world of good.
With the game against Workington firmly on the mind, Matt is excited for his first trip to Derwent Park. The Saints are aware that the Cumbrian side will be giving everything they have, and that our men have to be ready for that and show them the respect they deserve because, ultimately, we have to be in the next round of the knockout competition.
