Joining our Saints at the team hotel ahead of our Betfred Super League visit to the Stade Gilbert Brutus to take on Catalans Dragons, the Welshman was delighted to link up with his former league team.
Whilst the dual-code international’s time as a St.Helens player was short in comparison to his union career, he holds that period close to his heart. Eric Ashton played a key role in convincing him to make the move over to league, and it was a baptism of fire at first, but it made him a better all-round player.
The 1996 Challenge Cup win at Wembley remains one of his favourite memories, with Gibbs recalling it being one of his best performances, and he shared his pride at being part of such a special side, even adding that his time at Saints was the happiest of his career.
