St.Helens Head Coach Paul Wellens spoke to the press following his side’s 6-42 home loss to Hull KR.
It was a poor performance from the Red V at the Totally Wicked Stadium against the current league leader’s who are in flying form.
The Robins got off to a quick start scoring four tries in the opening quarter, with the help of a bad take from the kick-off, a Waqa Blake sin-bin, and our own ill discipline. Wellens was left very disappointed with how easily his team were being rolled down the field, and how individuals were attempting too many things on their own.
One bright point from the match was the debut of Saints Academy youngster George Whitby, who managed to get the one try for the Red V and kick a conversion. In tough circumstances, Wellens credited Whitby’s bravery, and more of his youngsters who he believes are currently our standard-setters.
A big talking point was the red card that was issued to Tommy Makinson, which left many in the crowd scratching their heads with it looking very incidental. However, the St.Helens Head Coach has stated that his players simply have to be better with their discipline, reminding his men that in the first half of the year it had largely improved in comparison to last season.
Alex Walmsley missed out this week, despite being named in the 21-man squad, due to a hip flexor injury but he may return for the match against Huddersfield Giants next Sunday. Morgan Knowles will have served his ban and be available for a match that is starting to get into ‘must-win territory’ to secure play-offs rugby.
