Head Coach Paul Wellens gives his review as St.Helens went down 16-2 to Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
It was a difficult afternoon at the home of the Wolves, with our only points of the game coming off a penalty in the opening minutes.
Wellens’ review critiqued the amount of errors our players made, and moments of ill-discipline which led to Warrington’s scores.
However, the Red V boss also looked at the positives such as efforts highlighted by Jack Welsby’s late try-saving tackle on Matty Ashton. He praised some of the defensive intent, but acknowledged we need to improve in areas if we are going to be where we desire to be come October.
Welsby’s return saw him come on just before the second half, and Wellens reveals what the plan was for the St.Helens fullback’s return, also confirming that Harry Robertson has a bit of a knee issue which led to Welsby getting more minutes than was expected.
With one eye to next Friday’s home clash against Castleford, Wellens knows that it will be a pressure game as we look to get back to winning ways and try to further cement our spot in the top six of the Betfred Super League.
When asked if he would be awaiting possible calls from the Match Review Panel, he gave his thoughts on the two yellow cards in the match, one of which was for Matty Lees and he believed it should have been ‘penalty sufficient’.
Finally, in a further update on his squad, Paul also talked about possible returnees for the game against the Tigers, such as Daryl Clark, but that Curtis Sironen has sadly had a setback and if we reach the play-offs he would be mark his return then.
