Head coach Paul Wellens spoke to the press for the first time this season following a competitive game last night as we progressed to the next round of the Challenge Cup with victory over West Hull
On the game Paul described it as an interesting experience. With the unknown element leading to some difficulties through the week, and in the game itself. Paul praised the NCL side for the way they kept competing in the game, showing a lot of defensive resilience throughout, going on to say he was happy with how the game went.
The game saw debuts for two of our off season recruits in Lewis Murphy and Tristan Sailor. The pace they both have, and both displayed in the game picking up debut tries, is something Paul is happy to have at his disposal in the squad this season, and Paul was happy with their performances.
Owen Dagnall and Alfie Sinclair also made their debuts in the game. Having come through the academy, Paul stressed they had earned their debuts with their efforts and hard work in the off season and in training over the past few weeks, but also over the past few years in the Academy where they developed.
Paul went on to discuss two more of our stand out young talents in Harry Robertson and George Whitby. Harry, he said, with his versatility has put himself in contention to play in a number of positions, and we all know what a quality player he is, setting up Tristan Sailor’s debut try. George, in just his second competitive game for the club commanded the team around the field, and while he still has a lot to learn, Paul believes he handled the occasion brilliantly.
