Head Coach Paul Wellens speaks to the press following his Saints side’s 82-0 home win over Salford Red Devils.
The Red V boss praised his players’ efforts in putting in a professional performance against a largely Reserves Red Devils outfit, insisting the focus remained solely on ourselves and getting the job done to begin the new league campaign with a win.
Full of praise for the Player of the Match, Tristan Sailor, as well as plenty of his other men, Wellens liked what he saw but respected that the level of opposition was not what was originally expected following the continuation of Salford’s sustainability cap.
Wellens discussed that whilst his team were happy with the result, they were disappointed as they all wished to play the very best Salford side that they could field to start the Super League year. Castleford Tigers are up next, on the back of two close and tight encounters so it will be a tougher task and one that the Saints are looking forward to.
Speaking about the Saints who missed out in the shape of Moses Mbye and Agnatius Paasi, Paul revealed that both could have featured in Round One, but he and his staff felt that they would benefit from training instead.
The Fourth Round of the Challenge Cup was also drawn at half time of the fixture against the Red Devils, with St.Helens set the host Leeds Rhinos. Our Boss knows it is two of the biggest and best teams in rugby league meeting one another once again in a big fixture.
