St.Helens Head Coach Paul Rowley gave his reaction following his side’s exit from the 2026 Betfred Challenge Cup at the Semi-Final stage.
Rowley admitted his side were second best in the biggest moments as their Cup campaign came to an end, and felt the contest had been competitive for long spells, particularly in the opening exchanges and early in the second half, but said his team failed to take control when opportunities presented themselves.
The Saints coach also highlighted the blow of losing captain Matty Lees inside the opening minute with what appeared to be a serious injury. That early disruption was far from ideal, and he acknowledged losing such an influential player may have had an impact on rotations and leadership on the field.
Despite dominating territory and producing strong underlying statistics in parts of the game, Rowley admitted Saints lacked the composure and energy needed to turn pressure into points. He felt the team overplayed at times and needed to back themselves more in one-on-one situations rather than forcing difficult or expansive plays.
Rowley also refused to use controversial moments as excuses for the result. Attention now quickly turns to Thursday’s fixture against Huddersfield Giants. With a short turnaround, the squad must again respond to adversity.
