Head Coach Paul Wellens speaks to the press following his St.Helens side’s dramatic 14-16 victory over Leeds Rhinos in the Eliminator Play-Off.
25 years on this week from one of the most famous tries rugby league has ever seen – Wide To West – there was another St.Helens remarkable score. Wellens knows that whilst his players were not perfect, they stuck to the task, played until literally the final moment, and got the victory to keep our season alive.
It was already a dramatic fixture before that frantic, remarkable finish, with Matty Lees leaving the stadium at half time due to his partner going into labour. Wellens explained the situation, and what Lees said before rushing off to welcome his child into the world.
The Saints boss was full of praise for his men; Wright for the way he has come into our team as a loan player and looked to put his best foot forward, and Bennison for coming into the side late on, scoring a try and adding a kick too. The winger was praised for his attitude not just in this fixture, but in recent months after going out on loan to Widnes.
Looking ahead to next week’s Semi-Final, Wellens insisted that if the Red V are to be successful and reach the Grand Final by beating Hull KR, improvements need to be made some areas, but he was keen to state there were areas of his team’s performance that they can highlight as positives too.
